Addicted to Speed

For pure adrenaline rush, few sports beat car racing. But if Formula-1 is out of your reach, there is another option — carting.
Moscow offers more than a dozen carting centers, both indoors and outdoors, and most are designed with amateurs in mind. Professionals usually prefer tracks at least 1 kilometer long with a more challenging trajectory, and these tend to be located outside the city, perhaps with the exception of Pilot.

While pros may bring their own set of wheels, anyone can get behind the wheel of a rental cart — even children, for whom there are often special carts and discounted prices.
All the city’s carting centers offer roughly the same choice of carts and services. Horse power and makes vary little, but prices, on the other hand, are more dispersed, averaging about 350 rubles for an adult to take a 10-minute spin. Any necessary extra gear is usually included in the price.
Indoor facilities tend to be more expensive than outdoor centers and have telemetry, but with worse air quality and considerably shorter tracks. Many carting centers have restaurants and billiards, and some even have bowling alleys.
For those who want to take things further, many of Moscow’s carting clubs include schools offering courses in the sport.

PILOT  Moscow’s biggest outdoor carting center, Pilot is spread over 39,000 square meters. Its 986-meter track is the city’s longest, and it boasts a large fleet, with 21 carts. Pilot is especially popular among carting professionals. The club is said to have Russia’s No. 1 carting school, and it is often busy with private and corporate events, competitions and master classes. Cart rental prices are in the range of 250 to 450 rubles for 10 minutes, including overalls, gloves, helmet and lining, as well as stats printouts. There is an outfit and tuning store, plus a shooting gallery, a bar and a restaurant that welcomes private parties.

DESYAT DYUIMOV  This indoor center has a 400-meter track and a fleet of 12 carts. A 10-minute drive costs between 180 and 450 rubles, with discounts for under-14s and on weekdays. There is a restaurant with four large plasma screens showing live sporting events, as well as a bar with drink prices ranging across the board.

KARTLAND  In addition to a 450-meter indoor two-level track, KartLand also offers a mini-golf course, Q-zar, bowling, billiards and pool, plus a shower and locker room. Ten minutes of carting costs 400 to 700 rubles for children, or 700 to 3,000 rubles for adults. The center also houses an Il Patio restaurant with a special VIP section for private and company celebrations.

100% KARTING  At 4,000 square meters, 100% Karting boasts of being the largest indoor carting center in Moscow. It has 22 carts and prices in the 250 to 450 ruble range, but gives each driver a 20 percent discount voucher valid any other weekday until 6pm. Birthday groups enjoy 20 percent off for one drive per person. The center also has a carting school, four pool tables, air hockey and a sports bar showing live broadcasts on seven sports channels.

SEREBRYANY DOZHD  An indoor two-level track with tunnel and bridge and a fleet of 11 carts are at your disposal at Varshavka, along with a bar, cafeteria, karaoke and a parking lot. Ten minutes of carting costs 300 rubles on weekdays until 6pm or 400 rubles at other times; alternatively you can buy tickets for 10 or 20 rides costing 3,600 or 6,000 rubles respectively, valid for 60 days from the date of purchase. A second center opened this year at Krylatskoye, with 13 carts and open-air 500-meter track. Ten minutes costs 400 rubles on weekdays and 500 rubles on weekends.

SINYAYA REKA  Located right in the city center beneath the Rossiya hotel, this center offers a 270-meter indoor track with a park of six carts. Rental prices are in the range of 300 to 650 rubles; booking in advance is recommended. The center has an Azeri restaurant with a wine list featuring Azeri, European and American brands. Prices are reasonable, given the location and choice.
